The campaign sets out to lift the standard for every child, every family, in every community across Queensland. It calls on the Queensland Government to develop a comprehensive Families Strategy, one that delivers targeted support for families facing hardship and ensures all children can access the essentials they need to thrive.
Supporting families in crisis
Right now, Micah Projects is supporting 117 families living in motels and crisis accommodation, together with 251 children. Of these, 180 are school-aged and 71 are under five years old.
These figures reflect a growing gap between the needs of children and families and the capacity of current systems to respond effectively.
Systems under pressure
Across housing, health, and education, systems are not appropriately addressing and are struggling to keep pace with demand - particularly for families experiencing homelessness, poverty, and domestic and family violence.
Queensland is in an unabating housing crisis. Families and children are unable to thrive without the most basic material need – a roof over their heads.
Homelessness and poverty have lifelong impacts
The impacts on children can be profound and long-lasting. Children exposed to these challenges are more likely to experience developmental delays, poorer mental health outcomes, disrupted education, and ongoing interaction with service systems later in life.
A call for long-term change
The Raising Queensland campaign highlights the need for a coordinated, long-term approach that prioritises prevention and early intervention.
A comprehensive Families Strategy would focus not only on responding to crisis, but on addressing the underlying drivers of disadvantage, ensuring children and families receive the support they need, when they need it, and for as long as it takes.
Looking ahead
Micah Projects joins fellow partners in calling for meaningful reform and sustained investment to improve outcomes for Queensland families.
The message is clear: systems across housing, health, and education are not appropriately addressing or keeping up with the needs of children and families. We need a coordinated, long-term approach that prioritises prevention and early intervention.
We can and must do better to ensure every child has the opportunity for a safe and healthy future.
